About DuPage Fitness & Rehabilitation

Looking to try something new and enjoyable? Need a bit of one-on-one guidance from a reliable professional? Sometimes all it takes to really understand a concept is a considerate instructor who knows how to teach at your pace.

DuPage Fitness and Rehabilitation (DFR) was created with a dual focus. The first was for busy adults who are concerned about maintaining health, physical ability, and optimal appearance as they age and the second was for teenage athletes who seek to increase performance measures and standout at the varsity level. Busy professionals and top- level high school athletes both endure high levels of chronic stress as they pursue goals and invest in intensive self- development practices. While short term physical, mental and emotional stress can be positive and spur development, long term exposure can be very detrimental and create injury or chronic disease. Stress is everywhere for both groups; for the high- level professional at the workplace addressing deadlines, office politics, and managing output demands as well as in the home setting meeting the myriad of family life demands. Athletes create stress through daily team practices, individual skill training sessions, weight training several times a week, pushing through injury, meeting academic requirements all while attempting to maintain a decent social group. Both groups if left unmanaged can end up with a drastic reduction in performance and compromised physically.

Therefore, managing health and performance must be dynamic and comprehensive to preserve ideal physiologic balance and increase resiliency. We at DuPage Fitness and Rehabilitation understand this and have created five unique programs to address our clients' core needs. The plans are progressive and quantified by measurable variables and have “graduation standards” for entry into each successive phase. Our recommendations address the impact chronic stress places on the organ systems of the body and allows our clients to build resiliency and preserve function as they address multifaceted demands. Our message is clear and our process is simple. If you want to optimize your lifespan, preserve your health span and maximize your performance potential, one must follow a customized exercise, diet, supplement, and lifestyle program with regular assessment to maintain accountability. Our plans are offered in 90, 180, or 360 day commitments, Make your program selection today and start your journey to better health, wellness, fitness or athletics now!

Personal Story

Growing up in a small town in the Midwestern United States (population 55,000), health and wellness lifestyles were something that I did not see or practice. My family and friends did not have personal trainers, practice daily health regimens, eat specialty foods or take a lot of health or performance products. I wanted to become a medical physician or a chiropractor because I wanted to improve the health of individuals with chronic disease and orthopedic injures. I would see my grandparents and parents with joint pains, diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease and want them to feel better and regain their past vigor. So, I thought that these healthcare occupations would best be able to do that. However in shadowing these practitioners over the years, I realized that their treatment focus was mostly for acute conditions and often was relegated to the management of a set of symptoms or risk factors. The root cause of their patient’s health problems went overwhelmingly unaddressed. I wanted a different experience and to be a proactive practitioner who recommended interventions that could improve health and slow or arrest physiologic dysfunction at the root. I did not want to wait to intervene in the healthcare process after the disease was impacting relationships, personal obligations and future desires. Thus, with prolonged study and critical examination, I focused on learning research based nutritional, exercise, supplement and lifestyle strategies that were proven to prevent or regress chronic disease for both men and women, and clients of all ages.

Professional Growth

I began my work experience at 13 years old, coaching junior high and high school athletes in our family basketball business. That experience in my formative years created a dual interest in understanding how to optimize high performing athletes and develop players with both skill and physical deficits. That journey led me into the academic study and lifelong pursuit of nutrition, exercise, lifestyle and physiological factors that contribute to the development and erosion of health and performance measures. I worked part time in the basketball business throughout college but then upon graduating sought employment as a personal trainer during the morning and afternoon hours while the athletes were still in school. I trained in several settings (private gyms, corporate gyms, private studios, sports performance facilities and client homes), before starting my own studio and operating it with my wife in March 2002. We operated our studio until September 1, 2015. I now develop software solutions for the health, wellness and performance market place and see clients in a private studio, coach them online and consult organizations about their health or performance program offerings.

Personal Story

I was first introduced to physical therapy following a cheerleading competition injury in high school. I already had a strong interest in physiology, healthcare, and exercise. During my rehabilitation visits I enjoyed the one on one therapist interaction and the knowledge that was shared with me to get me back competing as soon as possible. I could see my movements getting stronger and better coordinated seemingly after each visit. The singular patient focus and progressive nature of physical therapy were two aspects that resonated deeply with me, and pulled me strongly into the field. I was also attracted to the active role physical therapist are able to play in returning clientele to their full or an accelerated functional capacity and improve their quality of life. This experience several years later would provide the catalyst and foundation on which I would build my educational and professional pursuits upon and model my practice after.

Professional Growth

I have practiced orthopedic physical therapy for over 15 years. My career has been very exciting and filled with diverse experiences. Working primarily in private practice and outpatient care settings required me to build my manual therapy and orthopedic skills. I have taken a wide range of advanced orthopedic courses including Maitland manual therapy for the spine and extremities, myofascial release, strain counter strain, neuromobilization, McKenzie Mechanical treatment, orthotic fabrication and podiatric conditions and functional strength training courses. To be able to serve my clientele effectively I believe in remaining current with the latest practices, theories and techniques to improve joint health and reduce pain and inflammation. Working with individuals in pain, discomfort and decreased ability requires an empathetic heart, a considerate tongue, and an attentive ear. I take pride in providing all three for my patient’s/clients as they work through their care plan and move closer to recovery.
